Yes I say my first Judy Niemeyer quilt as there are So many more of Judy Niemeyer of Quiltworx patterns that I want to make, actually I have another one here just waiting for me for start, and after this one I think I may be hooked on paper piecing.
I used Hoffman Fabrics Bali Pops for the quilt top, first time using batiks as well :)
First 2 blocks done, perfect points = Happy Julie
This quilt is my first attempt at foundation paper piecing, after getting my head around the concept of sewing on paper with the fabric underneath so I couldn’t see it, I was surprised it wasn’t as hard as I thought it would be, although I did have to unpick my first line of stitching but after that it was all good :)
Block piles :)
Im not even going to say how many times I changed the positions of all the blocks but it was a lot haha, this was the first I tried and it was wrong but I just kept switching them around until I was happy and had them all going in the right direction, then I labeled them ready to sew together.
Then came paper removal time,, ok I will be totally honest here and say I was Not a fan of this part at all, not even a little bit, it took so long, it was not coming off neatly around the stitches so I had these teeny weeny pieces of paper still stuck in my stitches.
Tweezers helped but I wasn’t even sure if I left these tiny paper pieces in would it matter , so I got them all out eventually whilst thinking there has to be a better/easier/faster way hahaha
Oh but look :)
All that paper ripping was Totally worth it and after seeing it put together, the black sashing makes such a difference :)
Now to start on the borders
Borders are on and its looking great
Its ready for quilting :)
After drawing several designs on paper and thinking about how those designs would work to show the quilting, I ended out not using any of them at all, with all the colours of fabrics and no real negative space I decided while I was standing at the machine to keep it simple and hope for the best, so I just started quilting
And a close up
here is another, even though it has a big shadow across it, I still love the photo
You can’t see all that well from the front but I used black, purple and green threads on the top and in the bobbin switching between them throughout each block, mainly because I wanted the quilting to show up on the plain black backing, which I think looks great :)
Close up of the back, nice and simple quilting design but still effective and something different
I am really Happy with this quilt and really looking forward to making another paper pieced quilt in the very near future :)
